Soybean cultivars each have a unique genetic constitution and contain a mix of genes that may give each cultivar a different amount of resistance or susceptibility to different soybean cyst nematode genotypes. In the soil, SCN exists as a population of genotypes that contains a large variation in genes that may make it more or less virulent. Until recently, SCN isolates were classified by challenging soybean differentials (soybean plants that gave different responses to SCN isolates) and, depending upon those responses, were classified as a certain race. This "race" scheme was useful for many years and responses of PI437654, Peking, PI88788 and numerous other soybean genotypes to different "races is given here. The race scheme is slowly being supplemented by a different classification mechanism developed by Dr. Terri Niblack and colleagues. |
