Ethylene is a plant hormone synthesized from the amino acid, methionine, a member of the aspartate family of amino acids.   Ethylene is involved in fruit ripening, abscission, senescence, epinasty, dormancy, leaf expansion, flower induction, hypertrophy, and other physiological responses and may play a role in defense against pests and pathogens.
